Jangala is looking for partners

Over the next 3 years, Jangala aims to distribute 200 Big Boxes with grassroots partners with the aim of connecting hundreds of thousands people. Our focus is connecting people who have been affected by natural or man-made disasters or are in need of services such as health, education and access to information. We will loan Big Boxes free of charge to organisations working in these fields.

Now you might have a couple of questions before you apply for a box, first of all, what actually is Big Box?

Big Box is a bright purple, 2kg, briefcase-sized device that is operational in just 1 minute. It demands no technical expertise and functions even in the toughest of conditions, transforming any kind of internet connectivity into high performance Wi-Fi for hundreds of people. Big Box can be easily and cost-effectively expanded to serve up to 2,500 simultaneous users.

How can Big Box help me?

Big Box allows you to create a high quality Wi-Fi network anywhere, using any source of internet connectivity. For example, maybe:

  • your organisation offers aid and relief to displaced people and you would like to help them reach out to their loved ones and gain access to the internet.

  • you may work in an educational setting in which you need internet access help to access much needed educational materials.

  • your search and rescue team provides medical assistance in a post disaster situations, needing access to medical materials and to communicate with medical professionals around the world.

These are just a few examples. Internet access is such a big part of work and everyday life now and Big Box can help you stay connected in the most difficult conditions around the world.

Where does the internet come from? Who pays for it?

Big Box is very flexible, if you work in a place where there is internet already but it is not very good, Big Box can take this connection and share it fairly amongst large numbers of people. This internet could come from a wired connection in a building or from a 3g or 4g sim card. We have had lots of success turning weak 3g/4g signals into very usable Wi-Fi for hundreds of people.  If there is no wired connection or no 3g or 4g Big Box can also use a satellite connection.

Now who pays for this internet? The answer is you guys BUT with the technology in Big Box we can make sure you are not spending more than you can afford. We try and do this in a way that still gives a great experience for the people using the Wi-Fi.

How long will it take for me to get a Big Box?

After we approve your application we need to raise the funds for your system. It costs us £3k to build and deploy each box. The more information we get from you the easier it will be to match you to a specific funder. This process could be anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months.

What are the details? Are there any terms and conditions?

It’s fairly simple, we want to connect as many people as possible so we want to loan these systems for free to grassroots group, however there are a few things we need once you have the box -

  • We need you to use it! If after a few months if it seems like you are not using it all that regularly we will ask for it back so we can give it to someone that has a larger need for the system.

  • We need your feedback! We are still working on making Big Box the best product it can be. Please let us know what you like about it and what you don’t like. Are there any ways we can improve it? Also pictures and videos of the box in use are very much appreciated so we can talk about you and the people your connecting on our social media channels!

If you think a Big Box is right for you and your organisation answer these questions and we will get in touch ASAP to let you know whether or not you are eligible.
