We’re hiring for a Senior Mechanical/Product Engineer

Jangala is looking for an experienced and innovative Senior Mechanical/Product Technician to help us manufacture our products that will enable internet access for millions of people in communities around the world that need it the most.

The successful candidate will help us manage and refine our existing manufacturing process and prepare future iterations for production at scale. They will play an important role in every aspect of our physical realisation of technology, including rapid prototyping of new products, small scale prototype manufacture, and designing and implementing efficient large-scale production. We are looking for someone with substantial experience in technical production processes, someone with an eye for detail to refine what works and the imagination to envisage altogether new approaches. Someone who wants to use their considerable abilities to deliver good.

Details of the role

The Senior Manufacturing Technician will report directly to the Head of Manufacturing and will have a broad scope of input and responsibilities across our rapidly developing production processes.

The successful candidate will apply their experience and talents in the design of production processes to ensure that Jangala can produce the hundreds and in future many thousands of products that we will be delivering worldwide. They will share responsibility for all aspects of this process, working on technical processes and assembly designs as well as helping manage internal staff and freelance workers.

They will also play a key role in aspects across the product design and optimisation process, from helping to create rapid prototypes of the physical housings and assembly of new hardware, to designing hardware test systems that will be needed to ensure the quality of our firmware and our compliance with certification standards.

The successful candidate’s work will be focused on manufacturing but they will work closely with our broader technology team. Like all members of the Jangala team, we will encourage them to engage across the organisation, applying their skills and expertise to help Jangala to fulfil its mission.

SPECIFIC TASKS WILL INCLUDE

  • Helping manage our manufacturing process, optimising, assuring quality and redesigning processes when required

  • Managing our in-house and freelance team to ensure that production targets are met

  • Carrying out research and testing that feeds into our product reliability and development

  • Designing and implementing new processes 

  • Applying and improving our QA processes 

  • Identify, solve, implement, and verify technical solutions autonomously or as part of a team.

  • Locate new and maintain existing supplier collaboration partners for Product Developments

  • Provide engineering support for quotations and technical enquiries

  • Root cause engineering problems and seek to eliminate

  • Keep up to date with technical innovation in the RF industry and emerging manufacturing techniques

  • Managing stock and inventory

  • Representing Jangala externally, in discussions with suppliers, conversations with technology partners, and troubleshooting with end users (in association with our projects team)

THE PERSON WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for someone inspired by Jangala’s mission with a desire to innovate and refine, and so help some of the world’s most vulnerable people. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in technical manufacturing and passionate about perfecting products and processes. They will be comfortable learning, and teaching and managing others. They’ll have a proven history of delivering projects to a timeline.

THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ARE REQUIRED

  • 3-5 years of experience in leading highly technical manufacturing processes

  • Degree level or demonstrable equivalent experience in the latest manufacturing processes, for example in materials, CNC, 3D printing, testing using connected sensors and so on

  • A very high level of professionalism, in verbal and written communications, in setting and meeting deadlines, and general timeliness

  • Fluent in the use of appropriate software, including CAD/CAM, modelling and simulation tools, and the use of general office software

THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ARE A BONUS

  • Working in a start-up environment

  • Using microcontrollers and sensors

  • PCB design and assembly

  • Basic software development

  • Carry out FMEA

  • Check detail drawings to BS 8888 (308)

  • Create BOM’s and planning sheets for new products & systems.

The starting salary for this role will be £32-38k per annum. Jangala provides 29 days of paid leave a year and a 5% matched pension contribution.
